Did you
see that? The companionship of others who enjoy traveling
immeasurably adds to the joy of exploring new places. A
familiar voice in the midst of the cacophony of an unfamiliar
language is comforting. Traveling with
people we know is fun,
and sharing memories after we
return home is a special experience. |
About
Travel
Africa, Australia, Southeast
Asia – tantalizing destinations and
superbly
run tours keep expectations high about the next trip. Trips are
planned more than a year in advance. Most participants start making
their plans commit as soon as the trip is approved by the Board.
Our Trip Activity Leader, DB L., plans trips that include adventure,
direct exposure to the country's people, and trouble-free travel.
Biking
trips have included to Door County, Wisconsin, Cape Cod, and the Katy Trail beside the Missouri River.
Past travel
tours have
been enjoyed to Turkey, Africa and Australia. Ski trips have
included Cortina, Italy and
Morzine, France and Alaska.

July 29, 2007, Costa Rica
Fourteen
intrepid OHGLA adventurers set off on a 13 day tour of Costa Rica,
arranged by DB L. with Overseas Adventure Travel. After a
night at the capital city, San Jose, our local tour guide Eddie, and
driver Olman, bussed us to a series of five two-night stays at
unique (and sometimes rustic) lodges located beside nature
preserves, active volcanos and crocodile-infested rivers. We
toured the entire northern half of the beautiful green countryside,
crossing the Continental Divide twice -- from the Pacific to the
Caribbean sides and back, passing through a range of climatic zones
such as wet and dry rain forest and misty cloud forest habitats.
Costa Rica has set aside some 29% of its area into ecological and
forest preserves; its biggest industry is ecotourism. Besides
bird and croc watching during the river tours, our activities
included white-water river rafting; outrigger canoe paddling;
horseback riding; bat petting, visits to coffee, pineapple and
papaya plantations (and museums); empanada and guaro (moonshine)
making and sampling; walks through jungle biological reserves (one
of which occurred during a pouring rainstorm); pottery making
lessons and a visit to a local school, followed by lunch at the home
of a local family. All of us also zip-lined through the high
forest canopy, suspended from cables stretched between the trees
often 50 to 100 feet above the forest floor; and relaxes afterward
in hot-spring-fed thermal pools after smearing ourselves with
supposedly therapeutic volcanic mud. With his frequent
lectures on an amazing variety of subjects, our articulate guide,
Eddie, gave us a good working knowledge of Costa Rica, its culture
and customs, flora and fauna, history, physiography and geology,
agriculture and industries, politics (including a fair share f
scandals), and cuisine ... black beans and rice with every meal,
spiced up the with great dollops of Costa Rica's unique Lizano salsa
... aaaaah! We reluctantly said goodbye to Eddit and Olman at
our farewell dinner on August 9th at a restaurant in a 19th century
estate in the mountains high above the shimmering lights of San
Jose. Thanks to D.B. for arranging a great tour, which
provided some lasting memories.
