Sunday, Oct. 28,
Getty Villa Tour.
Twenty-five happy campers met at
the Getty Villa on Sunday, October 28 (happy because the Malibu
fire was out/no ashes in the air). Was a beautiful day, and from
the Villa you could see the Pacific Ocean. The Getty has an
extensive collection of Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities.
There is a Museum theater where you can view a film about the
collection; an orientation tour; "Getty Guide" audio self-tour,
Architecture and Garden tour; and much more to explore on your
own. Featured was an artist-at-work demonstration of glassmaking
techniques from The Corning Museum of Glass. The group gathered
for lunch at the Cafe serving Mediterranean fare, and after
continued exploring the galleries. Of course, the Getty has a
nice Museum Store which was patronized by a few OHGLA members. A
beautiful day at the Getty Villa was had by all. Lots to see in
one day -- which really calls for another visit! Report by Gayle

Arts and Crafts Day, April
2006
Betz S. organized the event and Dionne H. offered her home for
the occasion so we could come and "strut our stuff." This year our show and tell creatives
brought an array of their work, and we all appreciated seeing
another side to our skiing, hiking, biking and kayaking friends.
The potluck lunch itself was worthy of art/craft, as shown
below:

Culture creatures among
people inclined toward recreational activities? Who would guess
the talents placed on pause as we enjoy activities in nature.
Interests range throughout the arts and entertainment, often
surfacing in lively conversation along with new awareness and
appreciation of the uniqueness of others. |
About
Arts/Photo/Video Activities
Inspiration to explore cultural landmarks or attend to our arty
sides emerges from time to time. Several times we have had art
"show and tell" parties where people bring their works or art and
crafted creations. Paintings, sculptures, wood carvings, knitted
sweaters, quilts, photographs bring oohs and ahhhs as each artist
describes the making of the item they have brought.
The variety is always astounding -- painting,
sculpting, book and paper making, quilting, knitting, poetry,
short stories, photography, and other artistic endeavors. One
year Dick K. brought various grades of lava gravel that he had
collected en route to Mammoth for his bonsai trees. Another year
Van B. brought one of his home-built bicycles. Another type of
activity is an excursion to see something novel, often enriched by
arranging to have a docent guide. Yet another activity involves a
special workshop to address the interest of members in such topics
as computer usage, photo enhancement, digital camera operation and
videotaping and editing.
Past
Activities
A
visit to the Watts Towers by Metrorail, a guided tour through
Chinatown, and a walk-around to see Los Angeles’ landmarks Disney
Hall and the new Cathedral. Several members have hosted art socials
where the artists and crafts people among us have brought their work
to describe and amaze us.
Betz
Salmont is an artist who shares her talents by presenting
workshops for clients and performing volunteer activities.
Betz scans the cityscape for excursions we would enjoy.
